I want to grow algae on rocks for my otos, using a .5 gal critter keeper.

How can I cause an algae outbreak? lots of plant fertilizer? if so what kind?

Light, light and more light. Nutrients in the way of ferts would be good too. Leave the light on 24-7 if you can for the .5 gal kritter keeper. You can also leave it out to get some sunshine and at night get some light in your tank...

edit - AHH Dwarfs!!! You beat me to it.. :grr: Hahahahahaha, j/k... :p

Oh yea Undawada, if you want I can give you some algae tabs. My ottos used to love them. I also have some cucumber here that my cories don't seem to like, would you like that as well? I know my ottos used to eat that too.

ty for the link.

I tried giving my otos Hikari algae tabs. They don't go for them, but the cories love them :)

That's why I wanted to grow algae on a rock, the otos seem to prefer live algae but I don't have much of it.

I haven't tried cucumber though...

I know lettuce isnt very nutritional, but you could try it blanched if you have no sucess with the cucumber, also spinach......... :flex: <<<< POPEYE

My pleco used to love cucumbers and zuchinis (sp*) as well... Same thing with my ottos. I recommend getting them that first, as you won't grow algae overnight. Just give it a try, what harm can it do? And if they don't eat it, you can. :)

ahahah, i love cucumber salad....

Try a mini co2 sytem in your insect house thing. Ive used it in a yub of about 1/2 gallons and my algae BOOMED :)

I don't know if you've ever hear the saying "be careful what you wish for because you just might get it". I dream of the day I am algae free. I will feed my otos cucumbers and zuchini. I wouldn't ever try to create an algae problem.

Accidently stick tank in front of a window...... Worked for me!

Simple way to create algae is....

Fill a jamjar with water
Add conditioner
put some old dried leaves from your garden into it
place jamjar in full sunshine for a week

Your water should have turned greenish. Pour this into your tank. Voila :)

PS: Warning! This may create a algae outbreak in your tank
