i have a 10 gallon tank that i just set up sunday night. I ran it from sunday night till last night when i put some fish in there. The water was perfectly clear untill i got home from work tonight and now it is cloudy. I have 2 tetras 2 guppys and a white fish with black spots which i have no clue what it is. This is the first time i have ever had a tank so i need help and also need it put in lehmans terms because i dont know anything about this yet. it kinda looks greenish but i can take a pic for you and post it on here if you would like to see it.
it wont let me put a pic in here so i could email it to you if it would help.

Thanks
Travis

First thing, you put all those fish in an uncycled tank. Your tank needs to build up bacteria to basically clean up the fish waste. (Lots of articles on this site about it) I would do a big water change right now. (50%) Then get some test kits from a pet store. You'll need to test for ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte and PH
You'll get loads more advise. Good luck with the tank!

ty for the advice but how do i let it build up bacteria?

It sound like you didn't cycle :( . IMO the best option would be to return the fish and do a fishless cycle or get a hold of some mature filter media from a already cycled tank. You can some times get this from a friend or LPS, there are also lots of members on here that will donate media. Please read the links below.
Cycling
fishless cycle
more fishless cycling
Members willing to donate media

If fishless cycleing is not an option, read this topic I wrote for people in your situation, [topic="224306"]here[/topic] I hope it helps, if fishless cycling is not an option.

All the best

ty very very much this should be very helpful. I am kinda fish dumb so i thought i just set up my tank and let it run for a day or two and then i could put fish in there. i will try these things in your post and hopefully all will be ok. oh yeah i only have about $10 in fish so if they die i wont be out anything was just a test run before i went and spent money on fish. Also do you have any recomendations on fish that do good in a 10 gallon tank?

There is a pinned topic [topic="116208"]here[/topic] with recomendations for a 10g. Hope it helps

Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm by no means an expert but I do feel pretty confident now after reading A LOT!! Don't be afraid to ask questions. No matter how dumb you think it is, someone here has done it before! lol
Good luck!

ty i am sure i will be asking alo of questions in the future. i am going to do the cycle thing with the fish in there and if they die then i will just start it from the begining. i didnt know that there was all this stuff to do but it seems like it could be fun and keep me busy. thank you again

just wanted to say that my tank cleared itself up by turning the light off and feeding only once a day. Thank you for all the help but it seems to be fine on its own FOR NOW. Willbe back on soon for help i am sure

Did you suffer any deaths qdog69er?

no they are very lively and spunky. This is the first time i have had fish so i started cheap and got some from walmart because i figured they would die but 3 days into it they are doing great but i will let you know next week how they are.
