I've been treating for HITH, it isn't getting any better.

I've been doing 40% weekly water changes, feeding raw, peeled shrimp, and treating with Metronidazole. It doesn't seem to be working. Water temp is 76F. Carbon has been removed for treatment. I'm going to test for nitrates. This fish is 18 years old, I bought it when it was the size of a quarter.

Any suggestions?

Hi mate,

Sorry to hear about your fish.

Try to get furan2 and combined with metro (1tablet 400g for every 40L) and 1 tbs epsom salt but add the salt slowly as the wound may be reacted when connected to salt and it will stress up the fish.
Move the fish to hospital tank 40-60L tank if you could so this will use less medication. Also increase the aeration in the tank during treatment

Repeat the treatment for 2 cycle.

All the best

Water temp is 79F, PH is 8, nitrates about 30. Aeration increased, in 29g tank, 3 tablespoons salt added (6 is recommended on the carton).
