I added new fish to my 30 gallon last week and started losing fish.  The aquarium was so nasty but the readings were ok when I checked them and then I noticed that some of my fish had a white cottony substance on them.  I talked to one person and they said it was a parasite problem.  I took the worst female to the pet store and they said it's a fungus.  I started the fungus treatment last Tuesday and ordered the parasite medicine for them and started that treatment on Saturday evening.  Between adding new fish and now I've lost almost 10 of my fish.

Last night I fully cleaned my tank and am happy I did.  I found 5 dead fish hidden in it. Plus lost one sometime between the time I cleaned it and 4 pm today.  So right now I'm still treating for the fungus and parasites and have a totally restarted aquarium with no filter.  Hopefully everyone will feel better by Tuesday and I can still my hubby's filter cartridge and insert it in the 30 gallon to start getting the good bacteria back in it.

Here are some pictures from last week of one of my girls that looked horrible and didn't survive and another female that is still living but who knows how long.

You still see the white on the 2nd girl's back.  I'm hoping that I'll have her healed soon.  If the Pimafix don't work I'm going back to LifeGuard that has helped me before with fungus.

The fish looks really bloated.

IMO could possibly be Dropsy.

Symptoms usually-
Bloated
Skin lesions

Causes-
Compromised immune system due to stress or water parameters - swings in nitrites and/or ammonia.

Cures-
Difficult to cure, generally anti-biotics, salt, good water conditions and good quality food.

That's a general rundown, not high detailed but something you could look up in research.

Others in this forum will probably give a better diagnosis or details than I can. But that's where I would start due to these highly bloated stomachs.

Dropsy is very difficult to cure.

I would recommend salt because they are guppies and can tolerate salt.

The best thing to do is to keep your tank well mantained

I don't see any pine coning that would come with Dropsy! But to me too do they look bloated!

To treat Dropsy one should use Epsom salt, not regular salt. I would have to google it again, but I believe it has something to do with Epsom salt not being absorbed by the fish and therefor working better at pulling out the liquid from the fish's tissue!? I'm sure I more experienced member will come by and explain it better!

A good start when something is not going right with your fish is always testing the water parameters, to see if there is something going on there, and always doing a water change. There are many things going on in tanks that we can't test for, and fresh water, constant pristine conditions are very important in the healing process!

There is no pine coning in any of my fish.  My females have gotten huge after a few drops.  I have a platy that has been chunky for almost a year now and she don't even have the white on her back like the guppy do.

When this whole thing started last week there was no ammonia, no nitrates and 5 nitrites (that could be backwards) and the PH was like 7 but everything was fine. The tank was very full of algae and got worse after I started the treatment for fungus.  I'm still losing fish and the last three didn't have the chunkyness of the two I have pictured.  I'm more worried about the white stuff on them then the puffyness.  The white stuff is being treated with pimafix and I have them on a parasite treatment now that was started on Saturday.  I'm about to change the fish over to LifeGuard for the white stuff and I'm hoping that will help.

Ok now this is odd.  I lost a couple of platies when this whole thing started but have now been losing a bunch of guppies.  I'm down to three 2 females and 1 male and my poor male isn't looking to good.  I do have 2 guppy fry I can add to the tank if I so decided to but I may just give them away and stick to my platies for now and then when I'm sure all is good maybe I'll add a few different kind of fish to the tank and shrink the platy population down.  Haven't decided though.  If I do this I'll only leave myself with 3 platies (Male and female only or 1 male and 2 female ration hasn't been decided on yet).  I may just start out with totally new fish.  As I said I haven't decided yet though.  I do know though that I am going to go ahead and increase the plants in the aquarium here and there.

Probably best to wait 3 weeks before adding anything new to your tank counting from the day after your last fish death! Adding more plants is good :) , but be aware that these too have the potential to carry diseases into your tank.

I was thinking a couple of months before any new fish get added.   I mean the platys will keep me busy for a while with young ones getting added to the aquarium for a while.
