Aww i'm sorry for all those that lost their girls and boys, what are the symptoms of dropsy? I've been breeding fish for 8 years and i think that's the only thing i haven't encountered

I'm sorry for everyone else who lost a fish to this disease. Your boy was lovely! And blue_betta i'm sorry for your loss as well. The symptoms of dropsy are that the fish is swollen and pineconed scales. If anyone is interested here is a picture of her taken while she was sick. She only showed symptoms for 24 hours before she passed away. Perhaps her immune system was not very strong because of the nasty walmart cup.

Most tell tell sign of dropsy is the pineconing of the scales. When you look at the fish from above, their scales will be sticking out and they'll resemble a pinecone.
It's aweful to see in person.

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl passing though. At least she didn't suffer from it for very long.
I've had 3 bettas and 1 blue ram get dropsy and they've all lingered around for quite some time before passing.
My last betta Raj, I decided to euthanize b/c I didn't want to see him suffer for long like the previous one did.

Aww thanks for explaining that Amunet much appreciated so now i know what to look for hopefully i wont ever see it,is there any prevention measures?

 It's a tough break to have that happen. I'd only seen it in pictures until one of my girls got it. Shocking! She blew up to about 2x's her size and her scales stuck way out. She seemed to still enjoy life though. I had taken her out of the tank as she wasn't getting to the top for air very easily.. and put her in a shallow plastic "critter keeper" box. She slid around in that and would come out to say hi to me etc. Finally, she wasn't happy anymore so I did the deed with oil of clove a few days ago.

In the human world. we can give end of life medications like morphine to ease the pain but for our fish friends.. no such thing. It's hard to know the right moment to end their suffering but it's better to do that for them in an unselfish way. Veterinary medicine evolved so that we can give vacines to animals as well as pain meds and also help them end their lives in a more humane manner than with a shotgun. Perhaps medicines will become more available for fish as well in the future.

After all, fish are people too!!...!! Best wishes to you.
