I lost my first fish, my yellow betta- lemons. I saw him like 5 min. after he died, he had a little bit of red right under his stomach. As far as I saw he was eating fine, but he wasn't swimming much. anyone know what was up with the red?

I've lost Tiger Barbs to that.. constipation and other things will cause something to "blow"

That bright red is probably blood.

I actually saw one of my tigers die like that.. its a pretty nasty death for them, the poor things.

Haven't lost a betta to it, yet, but it sounds like that is what happens. The only way you'd know for sure is via autopsy.

Sorry to hear about your betta. I just hate loosing any fish. But one thing to keep in mind when buying any fish is the age of them in the store. Now I am no expert on bettas by any means. But when I am looking to buy new ones and if there is no breeder you can get one from is always look for smaller finnage on the males. Meaning, make sure they do not have long full tails yet and their fins that hang down below their mouths I also look for the short ones on those too. So I look for a smaller, now full finned male betta and it is surley to be a young one. I have never gone wrong yet.....knock on wood

but when choosing these types of bettas I have had them for 3 plus years. So even though your little guy might have had some sort of illness from the red spot he also might have been an older one too. It is so hard to try and get young stock of any kind sometimes and they might also not necessarily be in great health either. It is a real gambling thing.

Good luck to you and hope you find a new little friend soon......bugsy :D
