I don't know why I am telling anyone this, I am pretty sure it will come back to haunt me. This is one of those "seemed like the thing to do at the time" stories...
Yesterday. It's Saturday afternoon and I'm doing my weekly water changes out in the fishroom. I have got a 10 gallon tank that I have 3 very gravid female hifin blue variatus platies. As I am vacuuming the gravel I notice there are several babies hiding in the thick growth of plants. WooHoo! So of course I am very careful not to suck any up. I will net them out later.
The bucket I am draining the water into is not quite full, so I start on the wall behind me to top it off. The first tank here is a 29 gal with various sizes of convict cichlids. Gravel vac this tank, the bucket is full, so I hang my syphon hose up. Reach down to pick the bucket up and OH NO! I accidentally sucked some of the platy fry out! Got my net, rescued them from the bucket of doom, and added them to the 10 gallon fry tank that sits right next to the 10 gallon that they were born in. There are already platy fry in here that have been netted out earlier in the week.
Later, as I was refilling the tanks, is when I realized what I had done. As I am adding water to the convict tank, I notice that 2 of them have paired off and have a nest scooped out in the gravel. The nest is full of baby convicts, about the same size as my baby hifins, and I am pretty sure that these are what I found swimming in the bucket. And added to the same tank my platy fry are in.
Hopefully I will be able to get them sorted out here before long. Right now I can't really tell a difference, the cons haven't developed that "compressed" look yet. Hopefully the platys will grow faster than, or at least keep up with, the convicts.
Just thought I would share this story with you, of what can happen when you have too many fish breeding at the same time.
