I got my tank set up last weekend, but I can't decide what I want to put in there. The tank is 24x17x13 with sand substrate and a few plants. I think I want tetras and corys, but I don't think I can fit enough of each to make them all happy. I'm also looking into a female beta tank, but I already have a male and would like to try something different. At any rate, I'd like to have something swimming around before Monday.

Suggest away.

you have a 22 us gallon or a 20 uk gallon so you could put in 6 corys (peppered, bronze, albino, sterbai ect.) you could add 6 small tetras of your choice (neons, cardinals ect.) and maybe a trio of livebearers if you wanted (guppies, platies, mollies ect.)

I'd steer clear of liverbearer unless you want to be overrun with fry. If it is your first community tank go for simple easy to keep species. Glowlight tetras, cardinal tetras, rasboras, small corys, platies (these are a livebearers thou!), zebra danios...

:good:

6 Corys and 6 tetras wouldn't be too cramped in there? With the substrate, there are only 16 gallons of water in the tank.

This is my first community tank, so I'd like to avoid the live bearers for now.

you said about female bettas you could have 5/6 and a few cories, the cory and tetra idea would be fine as long as they are smaller sized tetras :good:

How does four cories and 5 female bettas sound? If I can find enough things for them to hide in, I'll go for it.

Thanks for the heads up on the corys. I didn't know that they needed a mature tank, but nobody around here has any, so I'd have to wait a while to get them anyway. I'll probably get the females this weekend if I can find some good decorations that they can hide in since my plants aren't very large. Should I add females one at a time, or all five at once? I've had the "biofiber" for the filter sitting in my other tank for a while, and I plan on bringing over a decoration or two, so cycling shouldn't be a problem. I'll make sure before adding any fish.

I always start my tanks off with Danios and Harlequins, they are incredibly hardy and active and pretty. You can add some corys later, my favourites are pandas but obviously you decide what you like later down the line and perhaps a bristlenose plec as they don't get too big and do well with the fish mentioned x

cories dont need mature tank, they just need cycled tanks. Mature tank is 6-12 months +
