Well i turned on my light this morning, and one of the rocks in the back had fallen over...so I went to put it back on in case it had hurt someone and my bolivian rams starting attacking my fingers! I know this is their territory, so I just brushed it off. I looked around and everything seemed fine except I saw this little pink bundle...I thought it was food that hadnt been eaten so I picked it up and it was sooo slimy! It was eggs!! I think they had layed them on the rock and maybe fallen off, because they were kinda far away from "their rock". So i put them next to their rock for now. What do I do!?!? I have never experienced anything like this and would love to have some fry! I am worried they will be eaten, as I have plecos and loaches, and other fish in the tank. Should I set up another tank asap!?!?

The Male gurading the eggs. Does amber colored, mean they're fertilized?

Mystery Eggs....anyone have a guess?
In my 112g I have 2 bolivian rams, 2 firemouths, 2 dojo loaches, 2 plecos, 5 zebra danios, 9 neos, 2 black neons, 3 silver-tips, 1 male betta, 4 serpae tetras, 13 tiger barbs, 2 kissing gouramis. The gouramis and firemouths are still small, 2"...This set up has been up and running for about a month now, and everything is going fine. I do know I will have to move things around once certain fish are larger.

As you might have guessed, you are unlikely to have fry survive in your community tank. Even with the diligent care of the parents, the serpae and tigers in particular will eventually eat them all. If you want to breed your rams, I would suggest setting up a 10g breeding tank for that purpose. There are plenty of resources on the web that will detail the setup. The good thing about the 10g is that you can use it for a quarantine/hospital tank when the rams aren't breeding.

BTW, congrats on getting your rams to spawn so quickly!

Good luck...

Well, to be honest, I dont think I'd want all the fry surviving...do you think there's a cnace a few might get by? I'd like to keep some just to show off "Look what I did!" :) SHe's laid about 200 eggs or so, and bolivians seem to be readily in stock, so I think I'd have a harder time selling them to an lfs, etc...

EDIT: The amber coored eggs on the rock belong to the rams, obviously, but what about those pink ones! I thoguht those were the rams' at first, until I saw the ones of the rock...No one is guarding them, but if they make it, it should be interesting to see who comes out!

Like hamlet said the Tigers will most likely consume the fry once they are free swimming. A group of 13 would make short work of them. Also most cichlids will fail in there first few attempts to raise fry. But dont worry...Once they start they will most likely continue to breed. If you cant get a seperate tank as modern hamlet suggested, i'd get a breeding trap and watch until they are free swimming ( assuming they make it that long )and place them in there. Congrats on the fry :D

yea maybe i will get a breeding trap then! I would like some to survive anyway! I have covered my filter intakes with the sponge right now as I'm not sure when they're going to hatch! They are doing a great job of guarding the eggs for their first time!! The female even attacked my 7" pl*co because he got a little close! The only thing is letting 'near' the eggs is the small rainbow shark who is about 2" or so. Anything else will get bitten by the male or female, including my hand! Once I see the fry free swimming, I just net them into the breeding trap then?

they have hatched!!!!! the rams have dug a small hole int eh gravel and put some flake food in there, and moved the surviving fry into it. it looks like there might be 30-50 fry. they are guarding this area even more aggresively now, so i'm hoping some will make it!!! fingers crossed!

they fry never made it....i am going to put them into their own tank soon, because I would like some fry to survive...

As for the pink eggs, I found out my apple snails have been laying them all over the tank, the clutch on the gravel had just fallen off the side above the water.

:( too bad they couldnt make it, thats very likely with cichlids on there first try tho so, good luck for next time!!
