how do fish have babies? i have a platty thats been fat for months i thought it was pregnant so i bought a floating tank to put her in anyway after a few days i gatherd she was just fat not pregnant so 1 month(today)on im cleaning my tank and i see all these little black eyes looking at me hiding in the plants so ive quickly(well took about an hour)scouped them up and put the safe in the floating tank but theres only 8 that i can see but each time ive gone back to the tank i have found another so im wondering if the pregnant fish just spits them out all together or 1 every so often and are the eggs that hatch or what? im a complete noob to fry
also will the other fish eat them???

well platy's are livebearers so give birth to live young, it depends on the size of the babies and the size of the mother on how many she has, they fry will be fine on finely crushed flake, and if they are seperated they will be able to go back with the others when they are bigger than the mouth of the biggest fish. just before birth the female produces new eggs and use the sperm they have stored, from one male they can store enough sperm for 7 lots of fry, the gestation period is around 4 weeks, so expect some more around that time. :good: other fish will eat them given the chance, so if you want to raise them i suggest a floating breeder or a seperate fry tank, but when the mother is about to birth is suggest you leave her where she is because moving her can cause stress which can lead her to abort her fry, anyother information just ask :good:

THIS is a helpful link for your first fry

thanx for the reply:)
how do i know when she is about to give birth?

most of the time there stomach does sort of square shaped, her breathing may increase and she may become slower and hang around in a certain place

As some have said, the platy's are livebearers and the older, more experienced females can have nearly 80 babies at one birth! However they will eat their own young soon after they are finished giving birth and almost every other fish will eat them too. Also they can have them over a fairly long period of time. They are in eggs in the fishes body, where they hatch inside and begin to grow quickly. They are released and you will need to grow small brine shrimp yourself, very finely crush your flakes or even create your own infosouria using a banana and letting it float in water for a day to feed them. However the banana idea is purely hearsay from a respected fish site owner I know. Check that on the internet before trying it.

Normally flakes will be sufficient as livebearers tend to be born much larger than egg layers. Therefore the baby brine and infosouria aren't as essential to their survival.
