I just had to post, I'm so excited :) A few months ago, I went through a mysterious tank mass death and then any new fish I would try to put in was dead within a few days. Everything was testing normally and I couldn't figure it out, neither could the lfs. I was left with one angel, 3 neons and 13 cory cats. Well, I *finally* have this mysterious toxicity dealt with and I "tested" with 3 giant danios. They're still alive and thriving so I got another angelfish. My older angel had decided s/he was king of the tank and didn't take kindly to that. So yesterday I got 2 more angels (they're all the same size) to help distribute the aggression and it worked :)

I now have 4 happily coexisting angels again!

I was worried the danios would be too nippy/zippy for the angels but they aren't bothering each other at all

Congrats, sry for the mysteriously lost you had. I been through 3 of these mass exterminations in the past and lost 3 beautiful adult angels that i have had when i was in 9. It also killed everything else i had in the tank even the pleco. :( But that was the past n its time to move on and now i have 6 healthy happy angels growing at a fast rate.

I would be very careful with the angelfish because whenever they get comfortable with thier surroundings they tend to become lazy at feeding time and the danios WILL outcompete the angels for food.

I experience that too. My angels prevent everyone else from eating.

yah thats the best way of explainin it gaya  they are little pig faces  definatly charaters though considering i used to hate them with a passion

It may not be true for all cases but I experienced that with angels and I know of a few more people who have to. I had 3 giant danios and they would sit at the top and eat like they hadnt ate in 5 days, the angels didnt stand a chance. I had to move the danios so the angels would have a chance to eat. Plus I think the overall zippiness of them made my angels nervous

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for that. So far, it's all going fine - the new angels have very quickly learned that when I walk by the tank they *might* be getting food, so they all follow me as I walk by the tank or even just around in the room. So far, the danios kinda eat in quick zippy trips to the top, the angels just hang out at the top and graze and the tetras catch the flakes as they fall. The cories vacuum up the bits that make it all the way to the bottom in addition to their own sinking pellets.

I love having a full tank again!

My tank?

Giant danios 3 @ 5" = 15"
Cory cats (mostly pandas) 12 @ 2" = 24"
Neons - 3 @ 1.5" = 4.5"
Angels - 4 @ 8" = 32"

Given that the cories and neons are VERY low waste producers, I really only count the danios and the angels and that puts me at 47" for 46g in an established, mature tank that gets regular water changes. The angels right now are still pretty small - just over silver dollar size. By the time they get full size I probably won't even have the danios anymore so I think it's just fine.

I know. I use that as the most conservative guide, then take into account territorial needs. Like angels should have 10g each, which is why I'd LOVE to get "just one more" but won't and also why I won't get another giant danio - I don't want them to "outswim" the angels. Pretty much the only thing I need to complete my tank is about 3-4 more neons to build their school back up.
