anyone keeping a tank with a good assortment of the smaller varieties ???

best tank size ( would a 45 gallon be too tall )??? can you mix all the smaller varieties together, without someone nipping on a thread fin, or one of the other flowery finned varieties???

got any pictures of you lil rainbow tank???

I have no idea how big a 45 g tank is.

Most of my tanks were 3 or 4ft long x 14 inches wide x 18 inches high.

If you are talking about the Pseudomugils and Iriatherina werneri, you are better off keeping them in single species tanks so they can breed. You could keep Iriatherinas with P. gertrudae but you want the Pseudomugils as single species because they all cross breed.

I had tanks with small species of Melanotaenia and Glossolepis in. Melanotaenia maccullochi, papuae and sexlineata should not be kept together because the females can sometimes resemble each other. But you can keep them with Glossolepis ramuensis and maculosus, and also Rhadinocentrus ornatus. They did well together and when I wanted to breed them, I simply took a species out and put them in their own tank for a couple of weeks and then moved them back.

As long as they grow to the same/ similar size and you can easily identify the different species, then you can mix them in a tank.

my 45 Gallon is 36 inches long X 12 inches wide X 24 inches high...
so would it be considered inconsiderate or mean, if a person didn't make provision to raise the young, & just kept several pairs together in the aquarium & just let something eat the eggs, or fry???

while I would would probably find it interesting... I never did get into the hobby to breed fish... however I am hoping to breed Tilapia this next year

I personally don't think it's mean to allow other fish to eggs and offspring, circle of life and all that. I'm not in a situation to raise fry at the moment although it's something I definitely want to have a go at once both the kids are independent. I keep mostly Boesemani rainbow fish that do a lot of breeding, but I have a bunch of cherry barbs with them that take care of any scattered eggs.
