My jags are about 8inches wasnt sure if I had a pair or not. They cleaned all the gravel in their cave out recently. The also wont allow nothing near the cave. I just got home from work and the outside of the cave is covered in eggs. Im not sure if they are from the jags but they must be the are the only thing in the tank that their are two of. Unless the egg arent fertile. The one jag wont even let the other come near the cave so I can only assume they belong to them. This is exciting I never had anything breed in a tank before. Is there anything I should do to make survival of the eggs more likely? Isolate them with one of the parents? a divider in the tank maybe? I have a feeling that most if not all will be eaten as is.

If you really want the eggs to survive. Go get some Methylene Bleu, move the eggs into a well aireated tank, put the Methylene Blue in, and wait for them to hatch ( assuming thier fertile). Arent Jag's New World Cichlids? I think your in the wrong part of the forum.

thanks for the info. And as for old world or new world I really didn't know. Till a few months ago I didnt know what they were even called. I got them from a mixed tank for five bucks a piece. I thought they were just gonna be little fish till they out grew and ate all their previous tankmates.

AAaahhhh :good: Guapote's are EXCELLENT fish but extremely agressive!

Expect bloody nips when sticking your hand in the tank for periods of time, especialy with a pair, they'll often play "tag" and take turns beating you up.

Unless you want to watch them eat live prey, do not add anything else to the tank.

as for a tank, I hope you have them in a HUGE one and that you do very deligent water changes and their large amounts of water, if I let more then two days go by from my regular changes I could see it in the fish!!!!

ENJOY THEM!!! if you take care of them they'll be with you a while and you can count on TONS and TONS of fry!!!

I moved the cave to a spare 20g I had. I put the air stone half in half out of the cave. While I was at work the jags killed one of my plecos. They also bit my clown knife up his bottom fin has some rips in it and it has some red marks on its side. Will the jags calm down or be more agressive now that I took thier eggs and cave away? They never bothered the knife before today. Hopefully it pulls thru. The store I got it from had a mosterous jag and knife together so I though they would be alright together. They probably would have if they wouldnt of been protecting their eggs is my guess. I am about to hit up the store right now for Methylene Blue. Just got done movin the cave. Heres a list of whats in the tank for future reference.
2 jags about 8in
1 clown knife about 6i
1 pleco 6in
1 oscar 10in
1 cory cat 2in (surprised he has made it with the jags)

couldnt find Methylene Blue at the fish store i was at. Is there another name for it or something else with the same purpose? I do have some chems around like malachite green and tetracycline and other stuff that I cant think of offhand. thanks for your help.

Go to petsmart online and look for it on there. You can order it and use it nect time they lay eggs. What size is your big tank?

I must be honest, I think the eggs and gaurding parent(s) should have been moved together, as, they will remove infertile eggs. But, now that you moved them, infertile eggs will be a problem, so methylene blue will be needed.

Yeah, but you cant move a pair of Jags into a 20g tank. Plus the move might make them want to eat the eggs. I would rasie serpatley.

Isn't it better to have cichlid parents raise their fry? They'll do all they're supposed to, fan over them, keep the bad eggs out, protect their kids.

In truth, it is. But the Jags will beat the crap out of and kill the other fsih. And you cant put 2 ,8 inch kags ina 20g tank full of eggs and fry, can you? Most angelfish breeders take the eggs out and raise them themselves as angels are nortorious for doing a terrible job at parenting. Also, if you want to rasie and breed jags, you'll get mroe eggs and fry this way.
