Ok so I was doing filter maintenance now to be honest currently doing it. Fpwhen I took a pad out I noticed something move and I was like wow it's a baby!! Just one mind a little rusty from the looks of things. He or she is currently swimming in a jar while I continue to sort the tank out. What should I do!! I don't have a breeding box and don't want to put it back into the tank but won't it die with no mom?? What should I do just add it back to the main tank soon once I'm finished? What happened if he gets eaten or sucked up! I have a small tank but it's got no filter maybe a little heater what should I do??

Well firstly it wont die without a mom :) The mother gives birth and then its up to the baby for survival. Cruch up some flake food so it will be small enough to eat it.

I'm not exactly sure what to say about the tank issue though.. I would normally say having a filter is best. It cant hurt to have it in the small tank with the heater for now but as a permant home. Would you be able to get a filter or a breeders trap box any time soon? If not you may just have to put him back in the tank until your able to watch the water he is in very closly while in the small tank. Good luck! Wish I could have been more help!

..which species? Rusty cichlid? It just needs to use up the egg sack then, if large enough, will take flake normally. BBS and microworms will be better though, of course.

I shall get the small tank from the loft and monitor the water like a hawk :) I will look and see about a filter :) but if I leave the tank completely bare and monitor water will I get away without one for abit? It's a tiny tank but the baby is tiny :) bless it it's sat in a small cup at the moment I'll have to get the tank set before the temp drops.

To be honest I wouldnt know since I've never used it without a filter for more than 2 days.. But I have friends that has before as long as you keep the water clean as watch the levels.. testing it all the time making sure nothing goes wrong I would say it should be fine without a filter.

My friends had 50 fry in a 10 gallon.. so one fry should be ok in a 2 gallon for a little bit without a filter. Btw the safest filter is the sponge filter if your really worried about the baby getting sucked up into it. :) Although I've never had that problem but I havent used small tanks.. always 10 gallons or more. Good luck!

Brilliant cheers

I think the one I have is a 20litre I think the main tank is 190litre but I put one of the air stones from the big tank into it for agitation goes off at 11pm like. I'll watch the water surely a micro fish won't produce that much waste with any luck anyway :) fingers crossed I'll test it and change water :)

You'd be suprised...one tiny fry will produce at least 10 times as much waste as an adult fish of the same size. Many fish fry also secrete hormones into the water that, once they reach a certain concentration, will stop the fry growing and cause stunting.

Lots and lots of water changes are the best thing :good:

I put a cover of a piece of pantyhose over the end of the filter intake to keep the fry from being sucked up. Just put it on with a rubber band and that did the trick. I'd think you could also put some floss in the intake basket.
