I went to 3 petstores! 1st petsmart and for some reason all the tanks were empty! and then to petco and there was a sign that said "No Sale of small animals" I was pissed! and then to petland discounts. I went in and went straight to the females. Cheapest ones to be more precise. And it was a tank with like 7 hams. 6 very young ones and one huge one. I was like "is that the mother with her babies
Him: "no she's been there for a long time. She was in there alone before and then we got a new litter put them in. " I think he said they were put in on sturday. So i fell in love! Shewas huge which i was looking for and i felt bad for her cause no one would give her a home. So i was like "Can i take her" and he got so happy! I think she really needed a home. And then when he was taking her out she was so nice and let herself be handled. The first box he brought was to small for her. I guess she's kinda big. Probably cause shes ful grown. But i don't care. So now shes home. And shes pooped! I think cause she had to deal with all those little pups running aroung her. But i love her so much. She sits like a human with her feet in front and she looks so cute cause shes so fat. Here some pics. Oh and the link of the first "Im getting a hamster announcment". Oh and p.s i got that care free stuff bedding. So yeah hope its better than the shavings.

This is the cage without the light i put so the pics come out lighter. So thats her normal lighting.

I love the larger hamsters! She's so cute! My friend had a large orange hamster...he was so cute! Then he died and she went and got a dwarf who she NEEDS to tame because you can't take it out of its cage without it sinking its teeth into you! Argg! LoL
BTW, what are you feeding her? I'm guessing that pellet food? Because I know the seed mix isn't good for them, right? :S I bet hamsters are the only thing I don't know much about...

She's lovely, but she looks big, like pregnant big. Was she in a mixed-sex cage? This happens a lot.

*Edit: Looked at the photos again, and she looks REALLY pregnant to me. Pear-shaped.

This is a photo of my Campbell's Russian Dwarf (yours is a Syrian, by the way) female the night before she gave birth. See that big, fat behind? She was carrying 8 pups.

This is a photo taken of that same hamster's belly that same night. Notice the nipples? If yours isn't pregnant, you should never see those.

I'd suggest giving your female part of a boiled egg (white and yolk) just in case she is. She'll need the extra protein if she is, and she LOOKS it to me.

The only really badthing thing othe seedmix is that it's fattening. So I have the seed mix thats half pellets to. So next month im just going with pellets and keep varieing it.

Wow! i hope she's not pregnant! I doubt it though the hamsters in the tank were all really young and i thinall female. And they just got in 2 days before so i don't think she would get big that fast. But you never know what was in with her before!
If she is pregnant i could probably make them give me the supplies i need to raise them and buy them from me when there grown. I least i hope i could. But hopefully she is just very well feed.

Don't expect anything from Petland. They are the most god-awful petstore I've ever seen. Our local one sells very overprices, inbred dogs as purebreds with no papers. The lady at one of our local shelters said that a couple once bought a pure-bred home from them with a guarentee, and one week later discovored it was blind. They tried to return it, and Petland refused to honor their guarentee. It ended up at the shelter.

Anyhow, nice hammy, and hope she's not pregnant :/ Personally, I'd have gotten her from a dependable chain.

^ hey waych that! I also think its important to get my pets at dependable stores. My local petland is under pretty good management. And for one does not sell dogs. I would have bought a hamster with my eyes closed and would have been sure i was being sold a healty pet. Hopefully my hammy isn't pregnant cause i would probably then be contradicting myself. But I feel good about this petland.

Awww...she's so cute! I'm suprised nobody wanted to bring her home.

It's so awesome you got her the Carefresh bedding. What food are you feeding her? If it has alot of sunflower seeds, best thing to do is to take some out and limit her to 2-3 every couple of days to avoid obesity.

She doesn't look pregnant to me. Hamsters get fatter 2 days before birth so just monitor her for the next couple of days to see if she gets any fatter. :) But she doesn't really look pregnant to me. She may just have gotten a bit fatter because of her food or maybe too many treats at the store. :dunno:

Also, remember to leave her alone for the first 3 days so she settles into her new home. :) Leaving her alone to settle in will also prevent wet-tail.

Have fun with your hammy!

P.S: What's her name?

Yeah i got her the carefresh. I don't know why they didn't want her either. although there was alot of really young ones like pandas and whatnot but i love her! They were actaualso selling the hammy's from the litter that was in with her that were really young for 99 cents each! Someone probably brought them in and let hem have them.
Her feed doesn't have 2 much of sunflower seeds but i will start to pick them out.
I hope shes not preganant!
Opps leave her alone for the first 3 days! already broke that rule. I'll try not to touch her to much anymore for the next days than. Whats wet tail?
IDK her name. I need help! Maybe blondie! But shes more of an orange color. IDK i need help any suggestions?

I read your other post that linked to this one. I'm just wondering... if you were worried about buying her a "bin" because of the cost of regular hamster cages, what are you going to do if she ever needs to go to the vet? -_-

Also... those aren't pellets. Thost are alfalfa pellets for rabbits, which by the way, isn't even a good diet for rabbits..heh. Most mixes for rodents are crap. Just a bunch of bird seeds and dog food type pieces of junk mixed together and they have the choice to pick out whatever they want, which is usually the really high fat pieces (sunflowers, pumpkin seeds).

You should really get her on a totally pelleted diet, something like Mazuri is good, or even Kaytee lab block. And as treats give her dark leafy greens instead of high sugar things. A rat doesn't know if you are giving her Kale or a honey bar... as long as you are giving her something, that's all they want.

Also, stab some holes in the sides of that thing to get some cross flow going. The air isn't going to flow down into the box, it's going to flow through the sides. And you mentioned you had dogs.... I hope they aren't sticking their heads in there. That could really scare the living day lights out of a new rodent.

Also, Petco's animal's weren't for sale because they were sick... :/

Why can't I take her to the vet in a critter keeper? The cost was really not a problem but a was bigger container was bought for less than 1 forth of how much a hamster cage cost.
How do you know im feeding her rabbit pellets? It says Nutritionally complet blend for hamster /Gerbils.
I'll feed her pellets once she's ready.
And yes i do have a dog. And yes he does stick his head in there. Can't reach the hamster of course cause his shoulders are the bins height. But the hamster was fine and would actaully come up to sniff the dog.
How do you know petco's pets were sick?

you let your dog stick its head in there?? :sly: you need to find a way to stop that or you will have one dead hamster before you know it...if the dog doesn't get it (yes, it WILL figure out how to get in the bin), the stress will
