I feel terrible!!!!!

I have been very happy with the new fish in my Malawi Cichlid tank. They too seem very happy!! I came down this morning, and went through the normal ritual of turning on the light and watching the feeding frenzy. It was then that I noticed a fish was missing After 5 minuted of searching I found it. It had got itself wedged behind the heater during the night, and as you all know, as the temperature drops overnight the heater comes on!!! As you can imagine, the poor little thing had been cooked alive !!!! I feel absolutely dreadful, and being a vegetarian feel even worse that pain has been inflicted on a creature at my hands I can only hope that he didnt suffer!

Does anyone have any suggestions to stopping a repeat of this tragic accident

Any ideas gratefully received.

Poor fishy and poor you! Don't blame yourself though, accidents happen. Has your heater got a safety cove? You can buy them fairly cheaply and it stops fishes burning themselves. My plec took to hugging the heater a while back and he got blisters as a result. Bought a safety cover and problem solved.

ah i am sorry for your loss but as glolite said it is not your fault. a heater cover is the best bet i think

Awww that's so sad. Sorry for your loss. Yes, just get a heater cover. I have one in my big tank and there's no way the fish can cook themselves on it even if they spend the day lying next to it.
The only thing I would say is small fish could theoretically get inside the heater cover so if you have small fish in the tank try and find a cover that won't allow them in. My tank (if the fishless cycle ever finishes) will only have cats and angels anyway so far too big to get in.

I have now been out and bought a guard for my heater!!! I feel much better now knowing it will not happen again!

You should see me when I cook my 8 gold fish to goldfish soup on my 20g tank like 6 years ago . My damn heater is gone screw and all my gold fish were cooked the next morning. And it looks like something u dont want to smell or look at.
