I just want to say thank you all, it is amazing at how little pet shops actually know about fish and aquariums. I have had a tank for two years, and only in the last week have I realized how ignorant I really am (actually it started as the kids tank, but it is my baby now).

I have one question about algae. When I change my filter, should I be getting rid of algae from it? And, if I have green algae growing on my fake rock structure (I don't but have replaced pieces previously that I could not get the green off), should I be scrubbing it off?

I have an undergravel filter and a carbon filter, and 6 live plants (not too big though). I read the postings about keeping the algae, so I am a little interested in figuring out which is beneficial and which is bad.

Thanks!

Kris

Algae in itself isn't a bad thing. You can scrub it off if you want but it's not necessary. Most people get rid of it because they think it looks bad. In essence it really is good for the water. It will remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

I've found that LFS employees are not always as ignorant as they seem. A lot of them get paid based on their sales and don't really care if your fish get sick and die because you'll probably be back for more and that just increases the money lining their pocket.

So true most of the time, Very few know what they are on about!
