Hi All

I have a question. :S

Some of my fish have been acting strange by what appears to be scratching themselves on rocks and bogwood, they have been doing this for approx. 3-4 days (not all the time just occasionally) but there are no white spots, specs or marks on them that i can see.

Was wondering if it is white spot, how long does it take for the spots to appear or can the spots not show at all.

Could it be the fish just like doing this.

Should i get some white spot medication to play it safe and will it harm any of the other fish, being neon tetras, cory catfish and bristlenose catfish.

Cheers

how long has the tank been set up for, what are your ammonia, nitrite & nitrate levels?

Hi
Tank had a leak in it and was fixed about 6 weeks ago, we are using the same filter as before.
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = about 40
all tested yesterday, have living plants and doing weekly water changes to try and bring down the nitrate level

Your fish have ick. First what are your water parameters?

When they scratch themselves like that its called flashing and their gills are irritated by something. Ick is a parasite.

You need to medicate your tank. For ick I use Rid Ick +. It works great. If you don’t have salt sensitive fish I would add some salt in the tank. If they all have spots then your dealing with ick.

Be sure to remove the carbon as it gets rid of meds. Keep the water extremely clean.

With ick make sure you keep medicating when the spots fall off. When they fall off then go into the gravel and multiply. This is when the medication is needed the most.

thanks chicklette
i do have 4 bristlenoses and 7 cory catfish and heard they are senitive to salt so should the salt still go in.

Nope, don't add the salt. Plecos and corys are very sensitive to salt.
ok then, thanks heaps for that chicklette i wasn't sure if i should add none or a little, but none is the answer.
That probably saved a few fishie lifes :/ , ta
