With my 38 up and running, and the fact that everything will fully be sorted out.... I'm going to shut down my 10 gallon. I never could understand why anyone would ever shut down a tank they had. I always thought "just restock it and make it cool". But...

I want a new tank. Probably a 20 long to go marine in. And since I can only have these two tanks, I'll just scrap the 10 and go with a 20 long since it can fit on my black shelves. Hehe. Moving up from 49 gallons in my room to 59. :hyper:

So due to parents, and my own budget, the 10 tropical shuts down. I'll just have to be happy with a 20 gallon marine and 38 gallon tropical till I move out on my own and make 100+ gallons on both

Yeah i know where you are coming from- since the beginning of my hobby, i've upgraded my tanks many a time and i figured that its basically better to have a couple of large tanks than a load of small tanks.
Having less tanks around also obviously cuts down on the time you have to spend every week cleaning your tanks- i prefer to clean big tanks rather than small ones as i find it easier to work around things like decor and planting in the tank when you have more space to do so :) .

If you're going to go marine in a 20-gallon I would lean more towards a fish only tank as a reef tank would only leave room for 2-3 fish.

I think a lot of us go through this stage in which we started out smaller, and then as we get more into the hobby, had to get a bigger tank.

However, 10 gallon tanks are great for quarentee and/or hospital tanks and you should keep yours handy. Especially if you are planning on getting into a marine tank as they will be more in need of a Q-tank and it will be vital to seperate sick or diseased fish. Putting up a marine Q-tank is somewhat quicker if you use water from the display tank and some live sand/rock from that tank as well in order to 'clone' your 10 gallon quickly. This has been my plan for a long time, but now I just keep both tanks up and running and raise brine shrimp in my Q-tank when I am not using it. They are cheap enough to simply net out and throw away if I need the tank quickly.

Sounds like a great move. :D I personally can't stand anything smaller than 6 gallon tanks just because they're such a pain during cleaning time. I've been given so many small tanks, but I just rehome them.
