My little brother and I went down to the lake, and I got him to catch some of the little spotted fish that I had seen swimming with the 'minnows.' (They were actually mosqiuto fish.) I have 5 of them in my 10 gallon now, and they appear to be dalmation mollies, and they are all male.

How strange is that? I guess someone dumped thier aquarium fish when they got tired of them, but I am suprised they lived, seeing as the lake has tons of bass, bream, and alligators that would eat them.

Dang, now I have to deal with the whole 'mollies need salt' deal, don't I?

mollies will survive quite happily without salt, but they do prefer it :)

lol. they can do great without salt.. people say salt doesn't reduce thier stress level but for me it actually does.. lol..and it brings thier color back ..

The reason for salt is that Mollies are quite susceptible to a lot of the fish illnesses when nitrate levels are at low enough levels to be fine for other fish. Salt supposedly neutralizes some of the effect nitrates have on the fish. Keeping immaculately clean water will get rid of the need for salt. Just go overkill on the water changes, keeping your nitrates under 20 PPM and you should be okay.

if you have perfect water quality then you dont need salt.

But their is a spotted mosquito Gambusia holbrooki and these are generaly only the males that are spotted, so can you post a pic to make sure?

WOW! Mollies in a lake that survived! That is something amazing, especially finding them in there! :fish:

I would issolate them never know what there fetching into the tank.
Good luck.

hey well thats one way of getting fish for free, pic would be good though as stated by helter and wilder has a point when saying quarantine them first.
