I Cant Get Any Progression From My Tank

Well its been 4 weeks since i started this, i know its not that long but none of my levels ever seem to move

I started with 8 neons and one betta splenden. His name was Dexter

A neon died and so too did Dexter, so now theres seven. Its been like this for a around two weeks now.

I have been changing water almost every day, from 50% - 90%

My levels are the same

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0.8ish

Why can i not get the nitrite level down? Ph is 8ish Nitrate is around 20

Quite simply if the nitrite level is not reducing you are not changing enough water often enough

what size is your tank?

did you test your tap water?

are you treating the tap water?

The fact that your water is still testing positive for nitrite tells you that you need to exchange more water

At the end of cycling I had very high nitrate so I did a down to gravel water change, filled up and tested, still way too high. I read that toxins can persist in the substrate so I did another down to gravel change but this time whilst the water was at substrate level I added a couple of buckets of conditioned water and siphoned that out too, then refilled. That got rid of the excess

Once you`ve cleared any toxins your regular maintenance should see things kept at an acceptable level

Im using king british safe water to condition, using about 1.5 x the stated dose as recommended by other members

Il try the down to the gravel method but what do i do about the fish

Oh and the tank is 23l

The water going in tests clear for nitrite
