I Can't Believe This Product.. Almost Killed All My Fish

Just a thought here - do you remember whether the bottle was properly sealed when you bought it. I know, probably hard to remember something like that. Was just wondering if someone could have tampered with the contents (you know how you do get these nutters who do such things even to human food products?) with the deliberate intent of causing harm?

You know when the Lab did the test - did they test using the contents of YOUR bottle?

It's a mystery, that's for sure. Other factors could be contaminated food, toxins entering the tank via atmosphere (e.g. any sprays/perfumes/polish/air fresheners used in the room...)

Very frustrating for you!

^ That's what I was thinking. But 15 mins after adding the product they start acting weird, thats a little unsettling.

It had to be their product... there was nothing wrong with my fish before.. they were all healthy and strong.. So many giving live birth all the time... could bearly keep up with getting the babies out. lol.

I did let them know every little detail. I don't rememeber if the bottle was sealed....I think it was because i know I would have not used it if it wasn't... I'm a very cautous person. I was hassitent to use the product but after reading so much about it.. I figured it was safe to use. I underdosed becuase of decorations in the water and even made mark stand at one side of the tank to keep the fish distracted so they would not swim near where i added it so i could disperse properly.

The reason I used the product was becasue ... The tank was two months old.. and was cloudy for about a week... nothing harmfull.. I don't normally use products like that but I was sick of my Boyfiriend complaining of the cloudy water. I even researched the product to make sure it would not cause any problem with the fish's gills..

My ammonia was at 0 nitrite 0 and nirtate was around 10ml/L...

I heard somewhere that hard water and a product like that could cause lack of oxygen in the water.. I live in northern ontario and with great water.. soft water. I also have water flow on top of the tank . Even the chemical testing comany stated that would not be the case.

The company asked for the lot number.. there is none on my bottle nor the one's in the store. I gave the the expiration date.. the didn't believe me about the lot number so i took pictures of the bottle all over and sent them to them. lol. They stated they used one with the same exp date.

I found a Chemical testing company here that said they will test the left over product i have and let me know exacley what is in it.. I also found a company that posted what is Suppose to be in the bottle.. I have to pay to get the product tested.. but i am one of those people who have to know what happened.

I'm a very busy with school and work right now but I will get some money put aside to get this product tested

What kind of cloudy water? Cloudy water isnt a good sign. Also, what brand is you est kit and how old is it (if new, check the lot number). Test kits can be inaccurate is been sitting on a shelf for a few years.

What are your water stats now?

Sounds cool. If you ask Hagen for the MSDS for the product, I think I remember reading somewhere that by law they have to give it to you. That should tell you what's in it so some research can be done.

Hagan testing kit with water vials... I will be switching to another company once they are done.. spent $60.00 on ammonia, nitrate, nitrite and ph.. they do work great.

the levels in the tank were all very low at the time...I can't remember right now but I will look through the e-mail i sent them at the time and find out. edit... oh yes it is 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 10 for nirtate. I read it earlier today..

My levels now are ammonia 0.3 ml/l nitrate 20 ml/l and nitrite is 0.00 ml/l I still have ammonia becuse i had to drain the tank when that happened and refill it starting a cycle to happen. Strange thing going on now with my tank.. never had this before but the ph keeps getting lower and lower .. sitting at a 6.1 right now... I've always had a 6.8 to 7.2 ph on my tanks for over a year... the test of the water out of the tap is 7.2... any sugestions on ph would be great. I would perfer to let it settle out on it's own with water changes... I'm baffeled on the ph dropping right now.. what could cause that? the only differnt thing is feeding my pleco zucchini... I'm not sure if zucchini would effect the ph..... it does make them poo alot and i only leave the zucchini in overnight.

If I could talk to Hagen directly instead of e-mail it would be great but the reps here in canada only speak french... I will send an e-mail requesting what is in their product and go from there.

Thanks for the advice.

So...how old is the test kit and what was the cloudy water like?

If you had cloudy water...there was something wrong with the tank before hand, and if that's the case the P clear wont do anything to help that, though it shouldn't be directly toxic to fish at recommended levels, it could theoretically make the situation with the tank worse...not as fast as 15mins though.

P clear probably isnt good for fish, read this: http://www.skepticalaquarist.com/docs/filt...ml#mechfiltfloc. But I seriously doubt it could have such a large negative effect on your fish, considering most reveiews seem to be great.

What filter does your tank have, and apart from a plec that is fed cucumber, what fish does it have?

I have a 90G, 5 BP, one gibbie Pleco and one common. also HAD 5 mollies, 4 sworldtails and 4 platies.. now only 3 of each. I have a rena XP3 Filter and run a marine 200 on top for arrigation. I thought the cloudy water was from the pleco food or new tank syndrom. but either way the fish were healthy and the water levels were good.

The test kits were newer and are still not expired. I bought them in FEB the are test tube not strips so more accurate.

I'm gonig to read the article soon I am at work right now. lol. Will try and fit it in before my shift ends. lol.

OMG.... I just read a bit of the article.. I do have soft water and......... when i did the 20%water change that day after i saw the fish in distress .. i turned the lights off because it is less stressful for this fish after the water change .. They should have that warning on the bottle..... I can't believe I never read that before.

I'm going to keep reading
