Well, I have a 63 litre community tank that has been up and running a while now. On monday I picked up a second hand 3ft tank. Its had quite a few fish in it already. When we were setting the new tank up I borrowed the heater out of my smaller tank to put in the bucket with the new fish in. Just for 15 mins or so. Then I put it back on my little tank.

The next day the ammonia spiked in the new tank so I moved as many fish into my little tank as I could. Today one of the gouramis didnt look too happy in my little tank. Which I thought was odd as the tank is really running so well. I had a rummage around to see what treatments I had. Luckily for some reason I put my hand in the tank! OMG the water was freezing! I had only plugged the heater into the wrong bit of the extension lead and it wasnt on, and hasnt been on since monday night until today! How on earth the other fish are so happy I do not know. They must like variable temperatures! I have just put the heater back on and am keeping my fingers crossed.

I though what do I do slowly over hours degree by degree, but I though I will just put the heater back on and that should heat the water at a gradual pace anyhow! I just thought id share my little mishap. I will let you know how my fish get on, I am keeping everything crossed. I think the water temp was about 17 c when I found it today.

At least I wont be as worried if there is ever a power cut for a few hours!

DOH!

Bex. x

Thanks, They are looking ok so far! except the female gourami ;( fingers crossed. z

That is extremely common. Happened to me loads of times, but never lost a fish to it :hyper: .
If there is ever a power cut, I fill some fish bags with warm water to keep the tank warm. :good:

Thanks, im glad I am not the only one who has done this. Although I hope i dont do it again. Think I was so busy setting up my new tank I didnt realise.

Good tip about the bags of water! thanks. x

I recently bought some oddessa barbs, i was asked to float them a bit longer than usual because they were actually in a cold water tank i didn't know they could survive in low temps.

done a similar thing, thought i had unplugged something else and it turns out it was the heater, only noticed 4 days later, luckily it had only dropped to 20 deg. I got away with it.
