For a week soon. I have read about a block you can put in to feed your fish while you are away, and also read fish can live if they are not fed for a week

What is the best advice you can give me to make sure my fish are safe and alive when I return home. I would hate not to put a block in and come home and find my fish have not survived. There is no one I can ask to come in to feed them either.

Any advice greatly appreciated :)

what fish do you have?

most 'standard' tropical community fish will be quite happy for a week or so without any food whatsoever. Bear in mind in the wild they live on the brink of starvation most of the time, a week without food is nothing to them.

I'd very strongly recommend you don't use the feeding blocks, they're awful, release loads of waste into the water and your not there to check the conditions if something does go wrong. Put one in and your much more likely to come home to a tank full of dead fish. :/

If you do have fish that need feeding every day you can get automatic feeders, they have a drum bit you fill with food and some sort of clock you set, then it just drops a set amount of food into the tank at set intervals. They're normally only about £15, but they can be a little un reliable, if you do get one I'd recommend you set it up and leave it running to test for a week or so before you go.

:D

Thanks so much, that is what I am worried too about the blocks I have heard they are messy and I dont fancy coming home to so much waste and mess in the tank, after all my hard work of looking after the tank.

I have two catfish, 2 platties, 5 guppies and 6 neons :)

what catfish are they... so long as they're not monsters I'm sure they'll be fine. The rest will definately be fine for a week, resist the temptation to give them a really good feed before you go, this could also mess up the water.

I agree, best to leave them without food for a week than risk the food blocks, which IMHO are crap. I've left mine for a full 7 days without any problems.
