I didn't mean to do it, and I'm not even sure it was me that did it but now my son (who is almost 4) is on his third betta. The first two (he named them both Nemo) only lasted a few days but Racer (the third fish's name) has been swimming here for 2 weeks now. Either the first 2 were in bad shape or I'm doing something right this time. In my search for answers to dieing fish I found this site so I am trying to get up to speed faster than bettas go belly up.

Did you cycle the tank?

How big is the tank?

whats your water stats, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate readings?

Just starting to read up on tank cycling so no.

Started with a 1 gallon with an under-gravel system and after the first two died we upgraded to a 5 gallon kit. The filter quit after a week so we upgraded to a 10 gallon.

I did take a water sample to PetSmart and the said everything checked out but now I am finding out that they are not good tests and I need to do my own.

I am posting over in the new tanks now to find out what I really need so I won't buy the wrong stuff.

Well it sounds like you are on the right track now so good luck!

This is the mistake I made when first started the hobby, I just fille a tank up, took a water sample in and the readings was great, that's because there was no cycle ever started in my tank.

Nice to see your on the right track now though :-D
