I Accidently Killed My Cory

tank is 40 gallons. although i have jsut been told its 46 gallons so i dont know.
its 48x15x15 inches.
It is both of them!

Your tank is 39 (UK)Gallons or 47 (US) Gallons (IF it is filled to the brim). Unfortunately, many people forget to state if they are talking about UK imperial Gallons, or US imperial Gallons - these two measurement are DIFFERNT so be careful - always ask of that which is implied!

Stick with Litres (which is universal) - MUCH easier to understand and convert.

It's the same as billions, we don't use the million million, we use the US one thousand million.

Most things are imported and generally most things state gallons, meaning US gallons.

This argument could go on for ages and is one of those without proof dead enders.

But I'd DEFINATELY say you HAVE to be careful when people talk in Gallons. We use UK, they US, but because of typical imperial confusions it is utterly interchangable and NOT dependant on location.

BUT when 'we' talk about for example Watts per Gallon, we are talking about Watts per US Gallon, not because we (UK) now generally use US Gallons (We do NOT), but because the Watt per Gallon rule (for planted tanks) was coined 'over there'.

Roll on the Metric system!

I have tried netting the dirt off the sand which is really quick and easy although i cant get over the other side because my bala sharks will jump out.

No, i take the water out with a jug into two buckets. I use the net to scoop off some dirt

ah, there's your first mistake. siphoning out the water and the waste is the only way to go. :good: if your mom won't buy you an official siphon from the fishstore, ask to be taken to your local hardware store. you should be able to buy 5-6 feet of quarter-inch vinyl tubing--which is exactly the stuff attached to the gravel vacuums that they sell at the LFS.

to start the siphon, stick one end of the tube underwater.
slowly push the rest of the tubing in so that it fills all the way up with water and the other end is underwater too.
put your thumb over one end of the tube and hold it shut.
pull only the covered end out of the water and point it into a bucket. now let go!
water should start shooting out of the tube into the bucket.
use the end in the fish tank to suck out all of the goop.
if you want to pause to empty your bucket, just cover the end again with your thumb and put it back in the fishtank.
when you are finished using the siphon, remove the other end out of the fishtank.

Ok, hoping this helps as i have all my tanks with a sand substrate (play sand!)

This is how i do my tank cleans/water changes.

1/ Clean off anything on tank glass, using magnet, scraper and scouring pad if necessary.

2/Siphon out using just the tubing mentioned before, hovering just over the sand (if you use a gravel vac thing you'll find the end peice is so wide the poo will sink again instead of going up the pipe as you cant bury the end in the substrate as you would with gravel, so dont get one of those).

I take out a couple of buckets of water, then...

3/ With the wrong end of a net or whatevers handy (planter, scraper handle), i dig about in the sand to loosen it up. If you havent done this before, ONLY do a small section of your tank or the amount of toxic gasses you release could kill your fish. Next time do a different bit.
I also move one item that is sitting on the sand and either hoover under it or net out the cr*p and dig the sand up under it. I do one item in the tank each time again to avoid releasing excess waste.

4/ Finally remove another half to one bucket as youve just stirred up a load more muck.

5/ Net out any dead leaves, large bits of poo missed etc - sometimes i drag the net through the sand to catch anything ive missed as the sand will drop through the net and the poo wont.

If you need to give your filter media a rinse do that at stage four in teh last bucket of water, never in tap water.

6/ Top up with your clean conditioned water and have a final check for dead leaves etc with the net.

Done :D

thanks. my only problem is that if i go near the place where the bala sharks like to go they will jump out if they see anything such as a net or tubing. I am going to get rid of them along with my clowns for when ichange to a Discus set up although will my lfs take them off me for free? And would they give me bags to transport them?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
Don't be shy to ask, I bet they get this kind of request all the time.
