Ok I just found out that platies and swordtails interbreed...I have a breeding pair of each in my tank, are they going to interbreed? I think both females are already pregnant by their own species, but...?

Hi,

I may be wrong, but I understood that platies and swordtails usually interbred in absence of partners of their own species.

Heather is right about that. Sometimes if you don't have enough females of one kind, and more of the other kind, they can get pregnant. However, most of them are hybridised back and forth already, to get different colors and fin types...so it's not really a huge problem. You just might get a male Swordtail with a short, stumpy sword, for instance. :)

By the way, speaking of females...you'll need to get a few more. The best ratio is 2-3 females per male. This keeps the stress off of just one female. Otherwise, she can abort her babies, have birthing difficulties, or in extreme cases...die. :(
