hi new here, have kept tropical fish for a while, joined up to ask a wee question!

can different livebearers hybridise?

long storry short i ended up with a lone male knife livebearer (alfaro cultratus), two female guppies and a lone female platty in my community tank.
the single male knifie was seen harrassing the female guppies regularly and i witnessed a cople of successful copulations. a few weeks later a fry appeared in the tank that was the shape of the guppy but had the blue eyes of the knifie. unfortunately it was eaten before it reached a good size.
the female platty just had a "litter" a few days ago, she was as big as a house and then she was suddenly flat bellied. she has not had contact with a male platty for several months, but she has spawned, and today i noticed a new born fry in the tank again, similar to a guppy fry with again the blue eyes of the knifie, and the knifie has been seen attempting copulation with the platty.
can anyone tell me if these hybrids are possible?

i very much doubt that the fish in your tank could be hybrids, platies and i think guppies can store sperm for several months, all i know is swordtails and platies can breed together, but never guppies or platies,

i knew guppies could do this, but i did not know platties could as well. the new litter in the tank look nothing like the platy they came from, far more guppy like (and the guppies are no longer in the tank so no chance of them being guppies) and have the blue eyes of the knifie. the platty had a litter shortly after i got her and i could imidiately tell they were platties.

Alfaro cultratus male....... are u in the UK, I've got a female and need a male!!!!

Basically livebeareres are grouped together mainly on the structure of the gonopodium.
So Alfaro's may cross but I've never heard of it.

I've kept A. hubberi and breed many of them as well, as well as A. cultratus
Collecting fry is quite difficualt as their quite small, but i used to find them first thing in the moring, so when i know they was close to giving birth i would get up at 5am to check them befor it was light.

Basicaly with in a genus they may cross but it's still difficualt.
Known crosses
Most wild swords and platies
Guppy x molly
Endler x molly
guppy x endler
Swordtail x platy
gambusia affinis affinis x gambusia affinis holbrooki
Characodon lateralis x Characodon audax

All Poeciliidae can store sperm for a long period of time.
It's only Goodiead's that been to breed each time.

Here is a poor pic of my female but their my very fist rare livebearer i ever had 18 years ago.

thanks for that, im going to get a breeding trap today and try and isolate the fry that i have seen. i wasnt aware that all poeciliidea could store sperm for a leanth of time, in my experiance in breeding mollier, they need a male after each litter, or are they the exception?

thay all store sperm, but they may not store it as long as guppies.
