Hi! My parents always had an aquarium while I was growing up, so had a little experience with helping with water changes and things, but never wanted my own tank. Mainly because of moving around, but also because I knew it was more complex than putting pretty fish in a box, and I already had a lot of other pets.

Now in my 30s, my folks are elderly and have health issues, I needed to move into their house last year to help care for them. One chore I took over was maintaining my dads 55 gallon community tank, which had been pretty neglected. I started researching more about fish keeping so I could get it looking good again, and make sure the fish were healthy. Sparked my interest and passion, and now have two 60 litre tanks of my own, and really love having the tanks, getting to grips with aquascaping, and managing the many livebearers that are breeding! Luckily for me, my LFS is happy to take the fry once they're a good size, so overstocking isn't a problem! (I bet experienced people here winced when they saw a newbie had livebearers, haha! Sorry  )

Hopefully I can include a photo of my first personal tank; it's a 60 litre, with nine adult guppies, seven otocinclus, and around 50 red cherry shrimp... I only had two shrimp left a few months ago... it's been hard to get a colony established, but luckily those two were male and female! I'm entranced by seeing these guys everywhere in the tank now, they're growing fast and thriving, and the guppies haven't appeared to bother them at all. Tank is pretty planted, so that helps. The adults don't appear to eat fry either, so the other 60 litre tank is a grow out/quarantine tank. Tank has been set up for around a year now. Please don't judge the algae too hard! I encourage some algae growth for the otos and shrimp, but it's a little out of control right now. Have started dosing some excel to cut that back a little. I'd love to hear any suggestions you have for what you would do with this tank!

Hello and welcome to the forum! :hi:

That is a great looking tank!

You may want to upgrade soon... guppies require a lot of space, as they are active swimmers.

Tag me if you ever need help with Bettas or live plants. Hope to see you around the forum! :fish:

Thank you! I've put a lot of effort into trying to make it as good for them as I can. I'd been told that this size tank was fine for the amount of adult guppies I keep, but I know that there's a lot of misinformation and differing opinions out there! I move the fry to a grow out tank, will be moving these ones over tomorrow. What is the minimum size tank you'd suggest for guppies? I know the biggest possible is best, I'd love a 300 gallon filled with guppies, but space and budget sadly have to be taken into account. Maybe a 20-30 gallon?

I would love some help with IDing some plants at some point, or is there a good source for plant idents that you would recommend? I ordered a mixed plant package from Amazon for a good price, but don't know what all of them are! I have java fern/moss, some crypts, a sword and a dwarf lily, some water lettuce etc, but some, I have no idea. There's a nice grass like one that I'd love to ID and learn how to maintain and propagate!

Tank is gorgeous! And the tank size is perfectly fine for guppies, comes up to about 15 US gallons or 13 UK gallons.

I love all the plants you got, I dont even notice the algae ;) plus, some algae is totally fine and healthy

Aaaw, thank you! I really don't mind some algae, I've come to appreciate the natural, aged look it gives some things. I'm letting it grow on the back pane, trying to get an algae wall going, since I know the otos and shrimp love it. I provide food for them as well, which they flock to, but they also spend all day grazing. The plants cover the back anyway, so the algae isn't too dominating. But now it's making the sword leaves fuzzy, and hair algae is coming back, which I really don't love! Usually dosing excel for a week or so calms all that down, but leaves enough green algae for the critters.

I'm trying to learn more about aquascaping, the rule of thirds etc, so the tank has been revamped a few times, and I'm not satisfied yet! Plus acquiring random plants when I come across them or find good deals, without always knowing what they are or how big they're gonna get - it's a chaotic style of scaping, lol. I'm kinda treating it like my garden really, stick it in, fertilise it, hope for the best!

I'm very happy you think the tank size is okay for them. I would love to upgrade them when I can, but I've had £1000 of vet bills this month. I really can't afford to upgrade for a while, but I want them to have the best I can manage.

I personally think a 20g long tank is the best. But that’s just my opinion. ;)

I would love a 20 gallon long, they're beautiful for aquascaping, and I'd really love a school of panda cories at some point too. I do keep an eye out on adverts where people are selling aquariums, but it isn't the type of tank that turns up often, sadly. I'll see what turns up! I'd be very happy with a 30-40 gallon, if I can fit it in. Hmm, time to measure!

Check out eBay, the majority of my aquarium's have been purchased 2nd hand at a fraction of the price. You can pick up some really good deals if you are prepared to travel but some have came from my county so just up the road.

A 29 - 30 gallon tank is great for AquaScaping. It has the right mixture of length and height.

I agree. Getting a second hand tank is usually much cheaper than buying new. You can find a lot of good deals on Craigslist, eBay, LetGo, FaceBook Marketplace, etc.

Good idea, thank you! I check on Gumtree now and again, but I rarely look at eBay, I should keep my options open. I did pick up both my tanks second hand from Gumtree ads. I think I avoid eBay because I'm worried I would get out of control with buying more plants.
Welcome! Beautiful tank:)
Thank you so much!

For sure! I picked up both my tanks from Gumtree, and I check it to see what's around. The price of new tanks is staggering. It will be a while before I upgrade though, I had a £1,000 vet bill this month, the animal budget is hurting. But it will happen! We're always mentally planning for the next tank and the next upgrade, aren't we? :D

Welcome to TFF! :fish::hi::fish:I love your tank. It's very pretty!
Thank you! I love it so much. It desperately needs a trim and a tidy, and I never feel like it's finished and just how I want it, but I do love seeing the growth, watching the fish and shrimp explore and do their thing, and it's so relaxing to look at. It's not perfect, but not bad for a first tank either, I think!

May I ask about your profile pic? Is that a Betta in a hide? I'm planning a Betta tank next, and was wondering about hides.
