okay, so this isnt exactly a direct emergency, but congress is creating a bill that would ban importing on non native fish. im not sure if anyone has heard about this yet, but theres going to be a hearing on it April 23. heres a link to the bill http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-669 this would in essence destroy the aquarium hobby in our country.

i just wanted to get the word out to everyone, i wasnt exactly sure which forum to post this is but it seemed to fit. anyway im planning on writing my congressmen to let them know that if this passes it can destroy a huge part of american business, from stores, to shippers, to manufacturers.

not cool. Guess i have to stock up on my marine life ASAP. IF it does get passed, i dont think it would affect the freshwater end of the hobby much, but absolutely marine & reef. And another thing if it does get passed, the value of fish that are near impossible to breed in captivity would probably skyrocket

true, but i would imagine that this has stemmed from southern states having cichlid problems in their streams/ponds. i remember reading an article that talked about oscars thriving in a florida river and nearly destroying the local fish in it.

a thing that does worry me is that assuming this does pass, it would become increasingly harder/more expensive to even get food. if stores cant get fish they cant stay in business, which means that all the products they sold arent coming into town, and eventually could lead to foreign companies no longer exporting to us because theres nowhere for their products to go... i know thats a little extreme, but it kind of makes sense lol

I'd much rather see these guys work out the economy before they try and stop importing "dangerous" animals.
