I'm returning to keeping fish in a more involved way than before, kinda by accident.

While performing routine cleaning and maintenance on a swimming pool earlier this year, I discovered and rescued a juvenile Red Eared Slider - brought it home to help it recuperate and the rest, as they say, is a bunch of time and money!

Seriously, learning about the needs of keeping the aquatic turtle, led to collecting some local minnows and other stream life (crayfish, darters, sculpin). Every day is a new adventure and I've recently set-up a 10 gallon tank to explore plants and keeping simple tropicals. That tank is stocked with five small platies (2F,1M red wag; 1F, 1M mickey mouse).

As of now, we have the 29T with the turtle (Sundae) some minnows and two golden crayfish; a 20L with a bunch of minnows and the darters (the turtle, now about 2½", has mastered her fishing skills and I'm rather fond of the darters . . .); the 10 with some simple plants (Java fern and some crypt. wendetii), the platies, some snails, a bushy nose something and ich (didn't TRY for the ich, but I've got it) and a 2 gallon with a male betta (Captain Sparkles); my granddaughters project.

Looking around at various forums for help and information, and to pass on what I've learned in return.

Absolutely adorable turtle!
It's generally a bad idea to keep turtles and fish together, although it seems your intention is using them as food? The minnows anyway? ;o
What's it like caring for Sundae? My fiance loves turtles

There are a few issues, while I know you maybe weren't asking for advice on your stocking..

I -think- though I could be remembering incorrectly, that a 10g is too small for platies. Or at least that many..do you have plans of upgrading?
The bushynose also sounds concerning..are you referring to a bristlenose plec? The 10g is most definitely too small for it.

The 20L is likely too small for those fish I'd think, aren't they quite active? But like said, I think you're using them to feed the turtle so I suppose it can't be helped

Captain Sparkles is such a cute name for a betta! Do you have any pics of him to share?
Do you plan on getting a new tank for your granddaughter? Her betta would certianly appreciate it, as the minimum they should be kept in is 2.5g (and others would argue for 5g)
Here is a caresheet on them that you can read if you like, and possibly share the information with your granddaughter: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/423364-betta-splendens-caresheet/

I do hope I havn't offended you, and hope you enjoy it here.

*Edit* Just saw your other thread on the betta, I do hope he recovers soon, and can't wait to see him in his new home come Christmas! :)
Is your granddaughter on this forum as well? Don't want her to find out :p

:hi: to TFF!

Sundae is so cute!

I'd love to see some pics of your tanks!

Ninj has already covered everything about your stocking :)
