My 55 gallon Swordtail tank is located in my living room. If you are relaxing on the sofa you can either watch TV or watch the Swordies. Unfortunately, my vision is no longer 20/20 so if I want to really see what the little darlings are up to I pretty much need to be right in front of the tank. (My eye glasses help some, but not enough - time for a new prescription). Of course though, if I move over to be close to the tank, then the Swordies all gather round to watch the "food lady" and we end up just standing in one spot staring at each other. They usually can out last me.
But, the other day while cleaning off a pile of assorted junk that had accumulated on my sewing table, I came across my pair of compact binoculars. These are just a little cheapo pair that I bought for hockey games/concerts, they are like 10 X 25 power, small and lightweight, and have some special coating on the lenses to enhance viewing in low light conditions. I think they were like $10 on eBay a couple of years ago. They are absolutely awesome for watching the fishies with! I can sit on the couch watching TV and then during the commercial breaks I pick up the binoculars and watch whats going on in the tank. It's so cool! Since I don't have to walk over to the tank they don't realize I'm watching them and they go about their little fishie business. They are powerfull enough that I can see down in those hard to view places, like the bases of the plants and the far back corner where the ladies always decide to have their babies.
You all should give it a try if you've got some binoculars! I've learned all kinds of things about their little lives since I've started using them.
