How to sex a ram

Neither of my lfs have been able to tell me how to sex my rams, I just wondered if anyone here knew how.... one of my larger rams has a more rounded belly than the other, but is that to do with gender or just greediness??

Well if you do a search in this forum about german blue rams or just rams you are going to find TONS of posts about sexing them and just general info. The search button is down at the bottom of the cichlid forum page.

sorry.. but this part is not true.

I know this post is a little old, sorry. The females occasionally will have more spangling (little blue sparkly spots) on their big black spot. They will also have a pink belly when spawning. The males' front part of their dorsal will be considerably longer than the female's.

At least that's what I *think*. I can tell whether a ram is a male or female when I see them, but I'm bad at describing, lol.

males will be a little more streamlined (narrow) and the females are more rounded. if you see a bunch in a tank it's easier to pick out the females than individually. the females also have more pink on their bellies

Huh. So is the German Blue Ram iI just bought about to spawn perhaps? - it has a very red belly and is much more aggressive toward the tiger barbs than the other larger, paler (and presumably, supposedly, male) Ram is.

I don't know much about Rams and have never had fish spawn, so I have no idea.
