hey guys,
I have had my tank and heater on for 72hrs and just wondering if its ok to put a betta in there now?. Also do i need to treat the tank? if so how long after can i stick a betta in there? and what plants do they like?.

Karen.

did you add water conditioner to the water?

is your filter slow enough not to cause a current that will make it hard for the betta to swim?

any plastic plants and ornaments with sharp edges will have to be taken out. silk or real plants are best.

just a few things to get you started... i suggest you read some of the pinned topics in the betta forum.

I havent yet added water conditioner, How long after i have added that do i have to wait to get my fish?.
Ill be getting real plants, The current is not strong.

Thanks.

Karen.

if you have had your tank set up for 72 hours without water conditioner it wouldnt have one anything, as the water will still have chlorine in it, which is toxic.

maybe you should do a little more basic research before you think about putting a fish in it. water conditioner needs to be added in the correct dose whenever you are adding water from the tap into an aquarium.

once you know the basics - then you can add a fish. read the pinned topics in the betta forum.

Hi karen4kevin :)

If your tank has been set up and running for 72 hours, the chlorine has dissipated, but if your water authority adds chloramine, they will still be present. If you don't know which they use it would be better to use a water conditioner that removes both, just to be safe.

I am going to move your thread to the Betta section where you will get more advice from the members who keep them. Please click on the link in the email we sent you to validate your membership. :D

I aggree with Inchworm... while chlorine is likely gone, cholormine will not dissapate so easily. A water conditioner that does both is best.

Is your heater a 'dialed' heater? In that, you can set the temperature? Do you have a thermostat? What size is the tank?

Water conditioner works instantly, theoretically you may add the betta shortly after you add it. Bettas pretty much like any kinda plant they can sit on, and after witnessing my betta sit on a thread of Java Moss, I'm pretty sure they can sit on anything, now. :D Select whatever live plant best suits your circumstance, or whatever silk plant you fancy, all is good.
