The sponges are filthy and the tank has been shut down for 3 weeks so where do start thhanks

Well if the tank has been down for 3 weeks then the sponges won't have any living bacteria on them. Wash those under a hot tap in plain water as they are basically the same as new sponges now.

Put a sponge in each half of the two compartments. The compartments then fit together snugly, and the round hole should be at the top when they are joined. Hold the two sides together and slide the whole thing back up into the filter until it slots in .

I don't understand how you can have two plugs with this filter. It only comes with one plug brand new. So the only thing I can think of is that the previous owner maybe chucked in a spare plug for it?

CLICK THIS AND SCROLL DOWN

Clicking the above will give you a PDF file of the instruction manual for the Fluval plus series ( your filter in other words ) . Scroll down and you will come to a picture showing the filter in parts . That should help to futher explain the instructions I gave you above when it comes to putting it back together.

Since the sponges no longer have bacteria on them for your cycle, you will need to cycle this filter from scratch. Run the Fluval in the same tank as your current Elite filter if you have another tank running. That way you can avoid the complicated and time consuming process of fishless cycling . After a month, you can set up your 4 foot tank and put the Fluval ( which should be cycled by then ) straight in, along with fish.
