Are their any websites out their that tell you how to properly plant & progate the different species?? Bit like the fish ones that show you a pic, size & requirements.

There are so many dfferent types of plant, i.e. stem, root etc and was wondering if you just stick them in the sand & hope for the best or is their a particular way of planting them into the substrate. I know this seems a daft question but their are certain procedures your supposed to follow with garden plants so just making sure.

The moss & riccia are attached with nets & cotton which I already now know so don't need that info & I beleive theirs a thread on tying plants to bogwood. But what about normal plants.

Do you stick a hole in the sand & plant? Push plant into the substrate with your fingers??

I bought myself some nice curved long handled forceps to help as it's a bit of a reach to the bottom of the tank.

ahh okay. i see what you mean.

Stem plants. make sure you have at least 3 root nodes showing (if not float until they appear) plant each stem between 2 and 5cm apart depending on leaf size. imagine the fully grown plant and make sure each stem will get enough light. push stem into substrate and leave

Rosette plants (swords etc..)
trim 1/3 of the roots off (this will kick start new growth). remove any brown roots, the white ones are the healthy ones. make a hole in the gravel with your finger, place the roots as far down as possible and whilst holding the plant down with one hand pile substrate on top with the other hand. then gently pull the plant up so the crown (root tops) are just visable above the substrate. if you totally bury the crown the plant will rot.

the next thing to consider is placement, shade low light plants with high light plants to avoid algae build up on the leaves.

does that answer your question? if not please feel free to ask more

Great stuff, that's exactly what I need. I've bookmarked that for future reference. Just out of interest where did you get the info??

I'm sure in the past I've probably put the plants too deep & caused rot, & I didn't know about the node thing on the stem plants either.

A good book would make an ideal suggestion for an xmas pressie so can you recommend any for plants?

Just bought a book on amazon called 'tankmaster plants'

Shows the technique for planting, propogating & care of 50 common plants so will help me on me way.
