Hi, I intend to buy tropical fish soon. Can any one advise what is the best way to introduce them to a new tank??
Thanks

Well once you buy them you rest the bag they come in into the tank water for the temperatures to balance. This can take up to 30 minutes depending on the temperature difference.

Then afterwards every 5-10 minutes put some of your tank water into the bag so they get used to it. You can do this every 5-10 minutes of which some people do this for up to 3 hours. Not sure why :p

Putting them into your tank can be difficult. Most people will pour the water and fish into the tank. Or, I have just found out this method, you can net them out of the bag and put them into the tank. This reduces the chance of getting potentially diseased water into your tank.

However, some people have quarantine tank to put there fish in for a couple of weeks before they introduce new fish into their aquariums, so not to rish their current fish getting a disease.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. Do I add every 5- 10 mins of tank water then once its full then add fish? Do you think 1-2 hrs should be sufficient??

For the last couple of years, I've taken more time to acclimatise any new additions. When the assistant has bagged the fish, I ask for an extra bag of the tank water. I put the contents of both bags into a bucket when I get home, then add a cup of tank water to the bucket every ten minutes or so. It usually takes well over an hour, but it's worth it to me. I just think it's best to acclimatise any fish slowly.

also you can turn lights off as this helps to not stress fish as much. if there are other fish in the tank sometimes when its time to put fish in the tank which i think netting is best, you can add a small pinch of food or something to keep the other fish's attention away from new fish so it will be less stressfull.

different things work for different people, these are just a couple of things which are recommended!

I have to ask, have you done a fishless cycle yet?

If you have a "maidenhead aquatics" near you - go and get a "fintro" its the best £2.99 ive spent this year !

Its a small acrylic box with a hole in it ! - just tip (gently) the contents of your bag into it, then float it in your tank.... it slowly sinks, adding tank water to the fish, when its sank your done ! Great for the lazy !
