My filter makes the water very bubbley and makes foam collect on the top of the water. Is this in anyway a threat to my fish? Is there a way of minimizing the bubbles?

It's not a threat to your fish, but I know it doesn't look too good. What kind of filter do you have? Tiny bubbles are caused by air entering your pump. I've had this same problem with a leaky pump and with the airstone too close to the inlet of the filter. Air gets into the pump and the little propeller in the pump smashes the bubbles into smaller ones.

Foam is not good though, the bubles should pop when they surface. If they don't and create foam it probably means there is too much junk in your water. I think you need to do a waterchange. Did you run any water tests lately?

I just have one of those Top Fin 60 hanging filters, I have not done a water change in like a week so I will try that and as far as water test go my water is doing well... I don't know what to think!

I have the same situation with the foam on the surface of the water. My whole set up is new, just this past weekend. I have the same type of filter. I noticed that the foam started when I increased the speed of the filter from Lo to Hi. The fish seem to be doing well otherwise. The only time I notice the foam is when I lift the lid to feed.

i turned down my filter to low and since then the foam has minimized and the water still appears to be circulating... so we will see what tomorrow brings...

I'll try that too. The only reason I turned it up to high was because I thought I saw a little milkiness in the water. I'm a total newbie at this... the tank is new, the water is new, the fish are new, and I'm learning. I think I read that it can take a while for the water environment to stabilize... the bacteria, chemical structure, etc., and that it can cloud up and then clear up. The fish seem to be doing well though. They eat like little pigs and they zoom and scamper all over the tank. I'm going to test the water to see how it is, and also turn down the filter to eliminate the foam. The foam is just annoying. :grr:
