I have a bad outbreak of columnaris in my 55 gal community tank.

See thread: http://www.fishforums.net/content/Tropical...k-Now-All-Fish/

Ive come to the decision that the only chance I have of saving the few remaining fish that dont, as yet, appear to have it, is to remove them into a QT tank, which Im off to buy today, use some media from my ram tank to help cycle it and move them over, do 50% w/c, medicate and pray.

I can only afford a little 30L , which will house, my L200 plec, BN Plec, 7 tiger barbs because those seem to be the only ones left not infected, although I cant be sure they wont be soon.

Anyway, as much as I dont want to do it, I need to euthanize the remaining fish, gourami, platies, guppies, rainbows, corydoras.

I really really dont want to have to fish them all out and do singularly. As I will strip down the tank, filter, plants etc afterwards and re-start a fishless cycle on it for four weeks before adding the fish back (Providing they dont get it as well), then it doesnt matter if what is suggested could effect the filter, if you understand what I mean.

Sorry Im very upset, I dont wanna do this, but can see no other way around it.

Humane suggestions please, I know of clove oil, but how much would I need to add to the tank to knock them out, before adding I believe its vodka?? to actually kill them!?

It would really be easier and more humane to net all the sick fish and put them in a bucket and then add about 5 mls of clove oil. It is not necessary to add anything to kill the fish, if nothing is done to reverse the anaesthesia they will just die in their sleep and the overdose will speed it up. Clove oil is really the best thing to use.

Sorry for your loss.

If it was me I would rather be killed by getting knocked on the head.

IMHO there is NOTHING humane about drowning a fish in Clove Oil.

IMO the best way to euthanize a fish is a sudden blow to the head

Edit: am also sorry for your loss

Agreed.....although it is my partner who euthanizes the fish with a quick blow to the head....to me it is the quickest and best way to do it. (i could do it if I had to)

Really sorry for your problem and loss also

Have you even read about clove oil? To put it simply, its like our anesthesia. In fact using a tiny dose, people can anesthetize puffers and trim their beaks and put them in the good water and they wake up. I feel it's similar to human anesthesia in the fact it knocks us out and then we wake up....most of the time. Just like with humans, if too much is used they die in their sleep.

Clove Oil is a good choice, minxfishy. I, however, would start taking things out of the tank and net the fish and put them in a bucket. It'll be easier to mix that way.

Very sorry to hear about your loss as well  That's too bad :-( Stay the course with the clove oil. I've read a lot about it and think it's the way to go. I don't know that the people above have actually read that much about it.
