can anyone plz tell me how to differentiate between a male and female neon tetra...and plz tell me how to breed them...thanx...

Its hard to tell the difference between sexes with neon tetras, i do believe the females are slightly plumper though.

From what ive heard you breed them like and other egg scatterer, by using marbles or wire mesh to separate the eggs from the young once hatched. But with tetras im pretty sure the fry and eggs need to be kept in complete darkness and are hard to breed.

someone please correct me if im wrong

In sexually mature fish, the females are larger, rounder and fatter and from above the female looks wider than the male.

that's correct the eggs are light sensitive and must be kept out of direct light.

Neons can't be that hard to breed. They're the most widely available fish in fishkeeping!

of course not, but they are probably considered hard when compared against the likes of livebearers. but all you need to breed neon would be a tank in which you can place the breeding pair and then remove when they have their eggs. and just make sure that light does not destroy the eggs and you have the right food for the fry (which would be quite small)

its not the spawning that is the hard thing, its the raising of the fry, neon spawn at dusk, ive got a tank with 4 black neons in it to keep bacteria going until im ready to transfer my rainbows into it, i really should take a good look in there b/c the tank has been in a dusk condition since i've put them in there, will go and look now :good: who knows, i might have some eggs but not intented to though

yeah i do have eggs :hyper: well i think they are, take a look at this picture, had to take the pic with no flash on so not to harm them, got about 12 in there, the fish have been there for 4 days and all jumped over the divider to the smallest side but decided to leave them there, ive never seen neon eggs before so an experinced eye might be able to confirm this for me.

Sorry to OP of this thread for slightly hyjacking it,

will see if i can get another pic that is a bit clearer tough but have to touch it up on seperate software that will lighten the pic.

just been looking at the last site you gave and took a look at the others, they require soft water to raise fry in so thats me out of the breeding question, got mega hard water, found one that has hatched but its dead so prob not a good idea for me to waste my time as they wont survive anyway, atleast it tells me that the tanks ready for the rainbows now
