How To Clean Sand Substrate

I have a tropical tank with a sand base. The fish poo seems to be settling on it. The filter is working ok. How can I clean it.

Use a siphon.

Hover the siphon about a CM above the substrate and twirl the end of the siphon above the poo.

The poo should come up easier and get sucked up through the siphon.

Thanks for your response. Can you suggest a siphon. I did buy one where you have to push it up and down in the water but all it did was suck up a load of water

I believe you push it up and down in the water until the water starts to flow through it, then you do not have to push it up and down anymore.

Walmart, or your LFS should carry plenty of different siphons you can choose from.

tbh i just suck the hose end realy hard then aim in the bucket....2 seconds later... water flow!

Yeah, but there is a different type of siphon that eliminates that.

All you do is move it up and down until water comes out...really easy!

I would just use a piece of hose pipe for sand, typical gravel vacs dont do the job any better IME.

or get some corys to stir up the sand - with them constantly shuffling around in the sand i never have any poop on it as it goes straight into the filters - also MTS snails excellent for keeping sand turned over all the time

hi i also need help with this cuz i might be getting sand too. will a striped rafael get the job done too?

LOL! Thats brilliant, I can so agree with that statement!! I also have daft fish, when they syphon goes in, they play around it, and when water is gong back in, they all swim into the bubbles and play in it! Also, I have a few that play in the bubbles from the air stone, they go to the end of the tank and swim at top speed through it - and have a very odd tiger barb that likes to sleep in the bubbles at an angle!
