What is the best solution to give a second hand tank a real good clean? I heard a small amount of bleech in the water is ok? Is so what ratio?

Get yourself a kitchen sponge, you know the little ones with a scouring pad on the reverse, cooking salt and some distilled vinegar. Lashings of warm water. Give it a right good clean using the water and salt. Use the vinegar for stubborn scale.

We get lime build up on tanks here. I like to use a razor blade to scrape it off if it's a glass tank. I wouldn't try bleach, it's kinda risky imho.

I think any kinda chemical cleaners are gonna be a bit risky. Does anyone have a pressure washer you could borrow?? :)

I used salt water and got most of it off then a bit of white vinigar for the rest, worked a treat, given up a good wash and dry so there will be nothing in there now. Cheers 4 the advice, Next thing is cleaning a second hand Fluval 204 external filter?

bleach is a no-no. Residue from that will kill your fishies!

If you need to just clean it, a rinse with chlorinated tap water is all that is needed. Vinegar removes hard water stains. Bleach is a good disinfectant. You neuteralize it with dechlorinator, the same as chlorine in water.

For really nasty, grungy tanks, Sno-Bowl toilet bowl cleaner works great. Wear protective gloves, goggles, & long sleeved garments you don't mind having holes eaten in if you get some on it. You will want to use this outside, and rinse like you never rinsed anything before. Be careful around seams, and only use it on glass tanks.
