I'm wondering if anyone has every built there own simple vacuum.

i feel its silly to buy some premade Python one, all it is is a piece of hose with a plastic end on it.

In fact, i was thinking of just getting a length of tubing from the hardware store... then attached some sort of rigid stick/rod (prolly have to be plastic) to the end 2' of it to keep it straight... maybe leaving some extra hanging off as a handle.

just not sure what to use for the rod... also, dunno what would be a safe "tape" to use to attach the rigid rod to the tubing.

any ideas, let me know!

Well a python is different to a vacuum.......

What I'd try get some length of flexible tube and try and push a piece of solid piping into it, though really you could, if you had sand just use a long length of flexible tube.

If you didn't care if it was see through or not you could get a piece of PVC pipe (say 2") then find a part that would make the 2" pvc down to a 1" or 1/2"...then attach some kind of flexible tubing to that...just a thought!

Get a plastic disposable 1 liter bottle. Take it to the hardware store, find the proper size tubing to fit inside the bottle neck very tightly. Plastic tubing softens when heated, if it seems slightly big that's ok. Get around 4 feet of the tubing. Cut the bottom off of the bottle, heat up the tubing, and stick it inside the neck. Now go clean your gravel.
