Hi, my HM betta's fins are getting all ragged, the caudal fin is getting uneven and ripped, and the dorsal and anal fins are getting to be kind of like a ct, not really ripped but the rays are extending and going past the part in between it like a crowntail. How can I stop this from happening? Thanks.

Depends what's causing it. Could be fin rot, could be damage from something in the tank, or he could be biting it.
What size tank is he in? Filter and heater? Is the filter cycled?
What is in the tank, plants, ornaments etc? What sort of filter is it, sometimes thay can get their tails caught on filter intakes.
Any tankmates?

Well, the back is from himself biting, but what I don't know is how the rays are staying undamaged but the part in between them are just... wearing down and getting more like a ct on the dorsal and anal fins? What are the possible things that could be causing that?

EDIT: Someone once said that he's just growing, because the rays are growing faster than the part in between?

Have you got a pic of the damage by any chance? It sounds quite a bit like fin rot, not sure about the growing theory tbh..

I've been reading up a fair bit recently about HM's, and it seems that they don't tolerate higher pH's very well and their fins become damaged looking. What is your pH at? It might be an idea to provide a more "natural" water environment for him by adding Indian Almond Leaves to his tank, or some smooth bogwood? Apparently the tannins (tannic acid) that are released lower the pH a little bit, and the IAL's also have natural anti fungal and anti bacterial properties, so will promote healing. Hope I got all that right :)

This picture's kind of old, but newest I have. See how on the anal fin, some of the parts in between rays are bigger? That's what it looks like on his whole fin now. And there's no discoloration, so it's not fin rot right? pH is 7.8.

He is so handsome

Sometimes finrot has no discolouration, got one from a pet shop once that just had bits of his fins falling away. Just looked a bit papery, if that makes sense.

Hmm, I don't know what to suggest, in that pic he looks lovely and healthy but I suppose if it's getting worse then something is going on. Maybe try some Indian Almond Leaves? Can't do any harm and it has healing properties.

When mine have bitten their tails, often the rays stay intact for a while, then they chomp those off too. Have you seen him bite?
