So how the hell do you read a post and 2 minutes later come up wit 47 gallons from the dimensions of say 30"x12"x10"?????
i really want to be able to do this too.

or press calculator on your keyboard and go

2.5x1x.8x6.25=12.5UK gallons

12.5x 1.20095 = 15US gallons

12.5x4.55= 59litres

Hi. From the dimensions of the tank, you can calculate it's volume. So if you have a tank with dimensions 48" long by 12" wide, by 21" tall you can calculate the volume in cubic inches by multiplying the numbers. So 48" x 12" x 21" equals 12096 cubic inches. To convert that to a more useful number you need to know how many cubic inches there are in a gallon. In a US gallon there are 231 cubic inches per gallon. So to find the answer you take 12096 and divide it by 231 which equals 52.3636 US gallons. These are the basic dimensions for a 55 US Gallon tank.
It is also useful to know that there are 3.7854 Liters in 1 US gallon.
There are 4.546 Liters in 1 UK gallon.
There are 2.54 centimeters in 1 inch.

That's not how I do it but, then again, I don't attempt to get a particularly accurate answer :p I work out the volume in cubic centimetres (by multiplying the length, width and height). Then, because a cubic centimeter is equivalent to a milliletre, I work out the volume in litres (1000ml in 1l). There are approximately 4 litres in 1 US gallon so I then devide by 4 to get an estimate for gallonage. I don't like using very complex numbers because I preffer to be able to work it all out in my head quickly. That's why, if you look at my posts in threads with dimensions, I may post an estimate for the gallonage but leave it for someone else to work it out exactly :p Yes, I'm lazy.

:huh:
I never knew that there were so many different ways of doing this! ?
Thanks guys
(what kind of pixes would they be ooh feeshy?)
edit: that's a neat calculator there daza :)

Thanks tetrafan!
I need to get around to finishing it off.

I jump to my volume calculator
(still a bit of a work in progress. works with internet explorer not firefox)

It works on my firefox :p

Does it? Can you enter numbers into the boxes? If so then I shall have to see if there is an update, because I can't in mine (something to do with a function which is supposed to mask non-numerical characters).

The way we use at work is to calculate the number of feet
so 30"= 2.5 foot
12"=1 foot
10"=.8 of a foot

so you;d do 2.5 x 1 x .8 x 6.25 = 12.5 gallons

12.5 x 4.55 = 59litres

(just realised this has been said before oops
