Hope this isn't considered "off-topic"....my Lfs very occasionally gets in cockatoos from a local breeder, usually very nice fish, but I have just never had any luck with them -_- . Last time I was in there, they had what they were calling cockatoos, but they were a pale white color. Guy that works there said they ordered them from a supplier and weren't real sure what they were. Appear to be some type of apisto, but none I have ever seen before. Any thoughts?

edit:I would go back and buy these myself, just because I really enjoy "unusual" fish. But with my track record with apistos, I figured I would leave them for somebody else.

It's funny that when you are looking for females and can't find them, that someone else has them coming out of their ears!

I haven't found apistos to be hard to keep at all. They don't really tolerate high nitrates, but mine have done well in them (having a nitrate prob at the moment). They also dilike medications (haven't ever needed any in my tank). I think they are a wonderful community fish, and I am finding that them more "stuff" I have in my tank, the less they hide.

My guy only hides after I net another fish out , for breeding or egg hatching reasons , other wise he is in my grill all the time , I love him .

Cacs are costly , but I.M.E the easiest of apistos to kept , like pnyklr3 says hi nitrates are no good , they don't fair well at all with any ammonia build up either , I found out the hard way once while quarantining a trio , they went quick :byebye: .

As far as water chemistry goes they seem to be undemanding as far as being slightly hard water with a PH a little above neutral .

My water comes out of the tap 7.0 , HE THRIVES , i just keep on the water changes , he does fine.

Dunno what fish your lfs has there though, fishdudein .

You don't really have to worry about the pH. Most apistos like lower pH, but cacs will tolerate high pH. Mine (and my breeder, hence the females) are pushing high 8s and almost 9. They will live happily in high pH, but breeding is a prob.

I went to the shop I got my male , and asked about females , AGAIN ,one of the guys said he'd order some for me . I hope .

Are you interested in ordering online? I could email my breeder to see if she still has a billion females and if she would ship them. Not sure if she ships, though.

Thanks , but I'm a little reluctant right now , but would you mind asking , just out of curiosity ?read my post here , this time of year seems to be lucky for me at shops :dunno: why , I guess it's mostly the way the weather is here , and most people being inside the home doing things as opposed to nicer weather when we get back out side .

Ugh, I see your reluctance. I'll drop her a line to see how everything is going and if she'll ship.
Thanks :D
