ive just bought a potted plant and its got like cotton wool wrapped around its roots, how do you remove it without destroying the roots or do you plant the cotton wool in the sand? it a hygrophila

You have to remove the 'rock wool' as its known or the roots will get smothered. The best way is to tease it off underwater. I usually do it in the kitchen sink with a bowl of water. It takes patience but if you don't remove it chances are the plant will not do very well or even die off. The plants won't mind if a few roots get broken, in fact, I've read that it's often a good idea to trim roots before planting anyway. Good luck :)

If you have planting tweezers then you can use them to help you pull it off instead of just your fingers. If not, just work away at it and try to get as much off as possible (easier said than done I know...)
