I'm going to throw a cat amongst the pigeons here.
I dont think how many times you feed your fish is so important, its how much you feed them.
If you feed your fish, say 10mg of food per day, one feeding of 10mg is fine, 2 feedings of 5mg is even better, 3 feedings of 3.3mg is ideal etc etc. If you start to feed the fish 3 times per day, 10mg each time, this is when water problems etc can start.
Obviously this can cause problems if there are greedy top feeders present, and you need to feed all at once so the other guys get some, but i'm trying to make a general point.
Fish are identical to humans in the respect that they will be healthier if fed small amounts regularly, than if fed large amounts infrequently.
Note: I am not saying 10mg is a good amount to feed your tank per day, this is an example amount only.
