You can work it out by having a look at it, a good regieme would be to look at it when you do the water changes.

Remember to clean it in tank water and not tap water!

Yep - I had more or less the same routine as Jimbooo - and did mine once a week. Hard back breaking work to suck up all the junk/gunk from the bottom back cylinder bits - really stupid design

I washed the mechanical filterhead weekly under a strong shower too to get rid of all the muck and grime (which can slow down flow) around the impeller.

It depends on your water. If you have chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals in your water (which it seems the majority of supplies do - but not all), use something like API Stress Coat which will remove all of that or render it harmless.
