I've seen accross this forum that people feed their fish different number of times a day!

Should I be ok feeding my fish twice a day, once in the morning and evening.

I've read some people have fed theirs once, some people 3 times!

I just don't want fat or starved fishies :)

Hello Matt,
The guide lines i have been following is to feed once a day for a period of two minutes and twice a week they get some treats. I would say my tank is a bit on the over stocked side so i try to avoid over feeding.

Keith.

Once or twice per day for 30-60 seconds, with one day per week no food. Food fed is dry foods for 3-4 days, the rest is live food and veggies.

Very good question. My opinion on feeding is to monitor the water, mainly the ammonia level. When I first started I was feeding my Goldfish 2-3 times a day and within 1 week I lost one. They were all fish we won at the local county fair, so I thought disease. But I did stop at the local store and bought a ammonia test kit and the results were way off the chart. So next step was to find out what makes ammonia high, I found waste is a high contributor. Even the filters were getting clogged very fast. I then noticed the fish lethargic. So I did a complete clean, and experimented with feeding every other day, ammonia levels did drop but still over 1.0, did a few partials and still over 1.0. I then went to every third day and that was the happy/magic spot to get the ammonia at almost .5-.0. and now for almost 3 years I feed every third day. I also have in the tank a few Zebra Danios and they are OK with every third day. I use a calender and chart every thing I do, feed, clean, filter change and partials. I now only do completes every 3-4 months including good rinsing of the colored stones. Filters every other month. I do also test for all the other things, nitrates, nitrites, hardness and Ph and all are normal levels. Hope this helps!....

I largely agree with Biffles' feeding regime, although the idea of a fishless cycle and providing a large environment for a fish should allow you to be able to feed your fish each day without any toxic build up.

I feed my fish 1-2 times per day. I only put a few flakes and I try to feed a different kind of flake manufactured by the Ocean Nutrition range since my fish are omnivores.

If I find that any of my aquatic plants are struggling or if I've trimmed them and the leaves have got sucked into the filter, I'll decrease the amount of food and feed less frequently under the presumption that there may be more bioload due to rotting (I do try to suck out as much debris as possible after trimming etc using a Gravel vac).

I'm personally reluctant to miss a day out from feeding the fish but from experience there is no detriment whatsoever if you were to neglect feeding them for up to 5 days.

I personally used to do every other day.. But now ive started doing just the once a day

Yep i feed once everyother day too.
